Choosing the Best Electric Gate Solution for Your Property Part 2

Weight and Land Slope

Whilst width is an important factor in choosing your electric gates, the weight of an electric gate will directly impact your choice of electric gate motor.

The slope of the land also plays and important part when it comes to selecting your electric gate motor. Even on a site where the land slope is as minimal as 150mm end to end, it can impact the weight ratio to motor choice enormously. In this instance a 200kg gate could effectively increase the workload of the motor by as much as 5 times, resulting in a work load equivalent to that of a 1000kg gate.

Voltage choices

We can install electric gate operators directly to a 240Volt weather proof outlet at the gate motor location or if you do not have 240 Volt power at this location then we can connect the electric gate motor via a low voltage cable which connects to 240 Volt power via a transformer elsewhere. The degree of gate usage will influence your voltage choices.

What determines High or Low Usage?

Even 25 operations a day could be considered low usage, providing those operations were fairly evenly spread out over the period of a day.  If however they were predominantly at a certain time or times of the day then it may be considered more moderate to high usage.   Electric gates that require higher usage would therefore be more suited to a “commercial” type motor.

Choosing the Best Electric Gate Solution for You and Your Property…

There are many factors that will influence the perfect swing or sliding electric gate solution for your specific property & circumstances. These include the width & weight of the gate, the gate construction & land slope, voltage requirements, usage requirements and of course last but not least your budget.

At East Coast Garage Doors and Gates our experienced team will advise and work with you & your specific requirements, to come up with the best possible options for you.  The following information will give you a better understanding of the circumstances you may need to consider, that will influence your electric gate choices.

Width of the Electric Gate

The width of your gate opening will of course determine whether you install a sliding gate, single swing gate or double swing gates.

Sliding Electric gates are very neat and economical of space but can also be used to span across larger opening widths.

In some instances there is not enough room for a sliding gate to retract back in one direction; in this case Bi-Slider electric gates may need to be installed to enable the sliding gate to retract in both directions.

Where there is no space available for the sliding gates to retract back into, the best option may be to install swing gates.

In our next post we’ll discuss weight & land slope considerations when choosing your electric swing or sliding gates.

Which Garage Door Is Right For You? Is It The Roller Door?

Roller Doors

Possibly the most commonly known Roller Door is the B&D Roll-A-Door. Roller Doors or Roll-A-Doors are the most cost efficient & functional door on the market. Constructed from corrugated steel they provide strength against impacts and are suitable for many residential applications. They comprise of a ribbed steel curtain that moves vertically in the opening and rolls up and around the drum, guided by tracks and counterbalanced with springs. The Roller Door is easy to automate with the installation process being simple & requiring little space.  They are particularly suitable for garages and sheds where there is plenty of headroom above the opening and where a traditional look is required.

Benefits of installing a Roller Door:

  • Biggest advantage – space utilization
  • Opens and rolls straight upwards
  • Vehicles can be parked right up to the front of the garage door
  • Easily operated manually with little physical effort or suitable to be automated
  • Impact free movement, safer to use
  • Steel drum sits on top of the garage door opening, so they require minimal ceiling space
  • Ideal for garages with overhead obstructions such as lighting or piping

Available in most of the Colourbond colour range except Ironbark, Copperstone  and the Timbagrain and Timber Coat ranges. Roll-A-Door models come in a variety of sizes from 1200mm High to 5500mm Wide.

Other models in the B&D range of roller doors are the B&D Firmadoor and B&D Rollmasta. The Firmadoor is a more affordable option than the traditional Roll-A-Door that can be custom made to your requirements in sizes ranging from 3000mm High to 5100mm Wide.

Compare the pros & cons… Which garage door is right for you?

There are a large range of garage door manufacturers offering a seemingly endless variety of designs, sizes, colours and special finishes… so how do you know which door is right for you?

This article outlines some of the key features of the modern Panel Door design.  If you’re interested in other garage door types, we’ll be posting more information on the differences between garage doors in future blog posts over the coming weeks.

Panel Doors

Sectional Doors or Panel Doors comprise of a series of hinged panels with rollers that run in a track up and along the ceiling.

Here are just some of the benefits of installing a Panel Door:

  • Large range of contemporary designs and profiles for you to choose from
  • They open upwards and run parallel to the ceiling in a neat fashion
  • Unlike a traditional tilt door, they do not swing outwards to open, so you can park your vehicle right up to the front of the garage door without impeding the opening
  • In the unfortunate event of damage, sections or panels may be able to be replaced individually rather than the whole door
  • Panel Doors require less headroom than Roller Doors so work well in garages which have a relatively small clear space between the top of the door opening and the roof or other obstruction
  • They can be made to fit very wide openings
  • Can be fitted with a Belt–Driven Motor for a superior, smooth and quiet operation
  • We design and construct custom made panel doors in a huge variety of designs from elegant cedar garage doors to sleek Vitrabond or Perspex garage doors
  • Colorbond garage doors come in a variety of colours, but can also be powder coated, giving even greater flexibility to suit your colour needs.
  • They are available in woodgrain or smooth finishes and B&D have just brought out an exciting new range of wood lookalike colours!

Panel doors / Sectional doors -  are made to measure but are priced within height and width brackets.

We install & service garage doors Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.
